Welcome to Ecoli Facts. Please review this site with care. We offer basic information about a dangerous disease; E Coli. Ecoli Facts is not intended to diagnose this disease, but it offers a basis background of E Coli including possible signs and symptoms. Ecoli Facts gives a brief and important description of the disease.
E. coli (Escherichia coli) is a bacterium that normally lives in the intestines of animals, including humans. The presence of E. coli and other kinds of bacteria within our intestines is necessary to help the human body develop properly and to remain healthy There are approximately 100 different strains of E. coli, most of which are beneficial. Escherichia coli are a leading cause of food borne illness. Based on a 1999 estimate, 73,000 cases of infection and 61 deaths occur in the United States each year. Infection with E. coli is diagnosed by detecting the bacterium in the stool. About one-third of laboratories that culture stool still do not test for E. coli so it is important to request that the stool specimens be tested for this organism. All persons who suddenly have diarrhea with blood should get their stool tested for E. coli
