E Coli is a bacterium naturally exists in the digestive tract of humans and warm-blooded animals. It doesn’t present any health risks or problems unless it travels into the blood stream, where it can cause a serious infection of the intestinal tract. Certain strains of E Coli bacteria produce toxins that can also cause damage to the kidneys and other organs. The most serious complication from E Coli bacteria is E Coli infection. or Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). This syndrome is commonly called Hamburger Disease because it is often caused by eating undercooked ground beef. People of all ages can be affected, but young children and the elderly are at greater risk for the most serious complications of HUS. E Coli infection is one of the leading causes of acute and chronic kidney failure in children often leading to a lifetime of dialysis.
